PLAY With the North Mount Pleasant Arts Centre located in the heart of the community there’s extensive, year round programs that will keep the whole family busy, and happy. You can draw, paint, or try the potter’s wheel – in fact the facility has more than a dozen kilns including gas and wood-fired. The Mount Pleasant Community Hall is also a hot bed of activity. Facilities include an outdoor pool, a beautiful hall and a sportsplex as well as zumba and yoga classes. There are also tones of playgrounds all over Mount Pleasant, so you never have to go far to find a set of monkey bars. When winter hits, residents head to the Rosemont Outdoor Skating Rink. The rink was voted BEST outdoor skating rink in Calgary. Apparently their “ice guys” here have a secret method for creating the smoothest ice possible.
Szechuan Restaurant on 16th Ave has many fans in Mount Pleasant, who say it offers one of the most authentic Szechuan dining experiences outside of mainland China. Its menu includes well-known fare like ma po tofu and chili chicken, as well as traditional dishes like beef tripe with pork blood and marinated pig ear. Be forewarned that dishes labelled “spicy” are just that.
Log Barn 1912 is a charming rustic spot serving up freshly baked Okanagan fruit pies, Mennonite sausage, pioneer-inspired candy, jams and preserves. 4th Spot Kitchen & Bar supports local producers and tries to stay connected to the community. With nostalgic décor and a west-facing patio you can enjoy a delicious daily feature or head to the kid friendly dining room or the lounge for a glass of wine. They have spectacular bruschetta and terrific pizza with a gluten free crust option. The main floor is a casual dining area, while the upstairs is lounge/bar that also features fantastic live music. Plus there’s a great patio for those hot summer days.
DRINK Oak & Vine Wine and Spirits on 16th Ave sorts its bottles using a colour-coded tasting system, helping even the most clueless wine drinkers become seasoned drinkers. The Cat n’ Fiddle, self-professed “friendliest pub in town” boasts a fun pub atmosphere, a delicious breakfast for 3.99$ and a killer steak sandwich. It’s also a great place to grab a pint and hang with your sports team or watch the game. At 4th Spot Kitchen & Bar, located right in the heart of Mount Pleasant, you can grab a pint, enjoy nightly drink specials and head upstairs to their bar for some live music and late night nachos.
SHOP With plenty of shopping destinations just a quick drive away, you can head to the Core Shopping Centre, 16th Ave, window shop in Kensington or stock up on necessities at North Hill Centre. It’s home to over 100 shops and services including a large Safeway, hair salons, barbers, restaurants and a food court. You can get your shopping done quickly and efficiently.
GEMS The Mount Pleasant Community Association hosts a parent and tot playgroup in the MPCA lower hall. Programs are held Monday to Friday mornings from 9:30 am to 11:30 am with membership open to all families with pre-school aged children. In addition to daily fun for kids (and moms) the groups also throw amazing Halloween, Christmas, Easter and year end parties, which include bouncy castles, face painters, food, and crafts.
