PLAY When you want to hang out with a lively bunch, head to the Calgary Zoo. Gates are open from 9am until 5pm and in addition to all of the amazing animals and gorgeous habitats you can explore, the Calgary Zoo is also home to special events throughout the year including Boo in the Zoo, Zoolights and Zoo Years Eve. Visit the lush Botanical Garden and have a picnic in the grass before heading to the Prehistoric Park to check out the dinosaurs. You can also fuel your brain at the Telus World of Science, a new and exciting facility designed for all ages. Spark your curiosity through daily programs, theatre shows and special events as well as summer camps. If you like to stay active, you’ll be happy to know that Bridgeland is the start and finish point of the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon, Canada’s longest running marathon. Join the runners, or pull up a lawn chair and cheer them on.
EAT Good thing you can walk everywhere in Bridgeland, because you’re going to be doing a lot of eating. Every year, more and more diners, bistros, cafes and restaurants pop up in Bridgeland giving people more reason to live here and visit here. Diner Deluxe, a comfy retro diner on Edmonton Trail has an amazing Vegan Southwest Scramble among other delicious comfort foods. La Brezza, an authentic Italian restaurant offers a killer Lasagna Bolognese made by Mama Angela. Sushi Bar Zipang sources the freshest and tastiest ingredients and offers rare Japanese delights. Taza Deli on 1st Ave is known for its traditional Middle Eastern food, delicious falafels and fantastic service. When it comes to convenient and healthy prepared foods, The Main Dish will be your main go-to. This “fast food” style restaurant offers sandwiches, desserts and a deli filled with hearty and healthy food including dairy free and gluten free options.
DRINK From Chai to Chianti, Bridgeland has some great spots for after work drinks or coffee first thing in the morning. Deville Café and Wine Bar features wine by the glass plus specialty coffees and teas. Happy Hour is from 4pm until 7pm on weekdays and all day on weekends. Carino Japanese Bistro & Wine bar is also a great place to get into a bottle of wine and enjoy interesting Italian-Japanese fusion food.
SHOP If you line in Bridgeland, 1st Ave will be your first choice when it comes to shopping, hanging out and socializing with friends. From the bustling coffee shops like Starbucks and deVille Café and Wine bar to neighbourhood knitting shop, Pudding Yarn and loads of professional services, Bridgeland is filled with quaint shops and architecture that make everyday life more interesting. And when it comes to getting groceries, while there may not be a mega grocer in the hood, there’s a small market doing big things. Bridgeland Market has ice cream by the scoop, sandwiches made to order, espresso and a deli counter with meat, cheese and olives as well as an assortment of kitchen staples including local, organic and gluten-free options.
GEMS If strong community spirit is important to you, then Bridgeland would be an ideal spot for you. The Bridgeland Riverside Community Association lives by three words – engage, live and inspire. With programs like after school skateboarding and lots of opportunities to volunteer and get involved, the BRCA is a terrific organization that brings the Bridgeland community together and brings them together often. The Bridges Urban Renewal Development is another gem. This initiative has been a major catalyst for revitalizing the whole community including a new central park space and community centre. It’s a wonderful gathering place for residents and families in the neighbourhood who can also help nurture the beautiful gardens that can be seen during the neighbourhood’s annual garden tour.
Designated schools for kids with Calgary Catholic are Madeleine d’Houet, St. Alphonsus, St. Pius X, St. Angela, St. Francis, and St. Mary’s. For kids in the public district – their designated and optional schools are Stanley Jones and King George Elementary, Georges P. Vainer and Colonel Macleod Jr. High and Crescent Heights or William Aberhart High School.
