PLAY Hounsfield Heights and Briar Hill recently acquired a new state-of-the-art community centre where the community association shares space with the local fire and police departments. The centre contains a gymnasium and is used for martial arts, basketball, indoor soccer, and senior’s badminton. There’s a playground for the little ones too. If you’re looking to catch a football game, then you won’t have to go very far. McMahon Stadium is home to the Calgary Dinos, our CFL team the Calgary Stampeders, and many more high level organizations. It’s a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon or Friday night.
EAT Living in Briar Hill gives you prime access to some hot eating spots in the northwest. Juree’s Thai Place, which was called a “Soothing Thai Sanctuary” by Avenue Magazine, offers authentic Thai food, as well as an interior filled with Thai artifacts, water fountains and murals. You’re also close to Big T’s BBQ and Smokehouse, as well as popular chain restaurants on 16th Ave.
DRINK For your morning ritual you can check out Kwanzaa Coffee House – a local coffee shop that serves up premium coffees, teas and treats from all corners of the world. Be sure to go on a weekday, as they aren’t open on weekends. If you are looking to pick up a bottle of vino for dinner then head into Highlander Wine and Spirits, which offers expert staff, and a vast selection of wine and spirits. Moose McGuire’s is just across Crowchild Trail, and serves as a great neighbourhood pub.
SHOP For your every day shopping needs you have a few choices – you can head over to North Hill Centre, which offers over 100 shops and services including a Sears, Shoppers Drug Mart, Safeway and a World Health Club. For some funkier shopping you can browse the stores in Kensington village including Splash of Fashion, Purr and Urban Barn.
GEMS The Hounsfield Heights/Briar Hill community offers some pretty spectacular views. The region is located on an escarpment, giving residents a view of the downtown core to the south, as well as the picturesque vista of the Rocky Mountains to the west. Lions Park C Train is also located directly in the neighbourhood, which makes it easy for students and downtown commuters to get around.
